Christmas Island, AKA Kiritimati is in the Republic of Kiribati in the middle of the Pacific Ocean not far away from the equator. It is about 3000 klm north east of Fiji and 1200 klm south of Hawaii. With the main island in the group being 3000 klm to the east, Christmas Island truly is one of the most isolated places on earth.

There are just over 90 000 Kiribas people living on over 30 coral and sand atolls spread all over 5 million square kilometers of ocean along the equator. Most are very poor as the land are usually without soil and grow crops poorly. Economic opportunities are few with government administration service, fishing and tourism being the only real opportunities both in the country and also on Christmas Island.

The majority of the 5000 residents on the island have no or limited employment.

Fishing

Fishing tourism on Christmas Island is a major industry with several thousand fishermen from all over the world travelling to Christmas Island every year to indulge their fishing passion chasing bones. The island has an enormous and shallow lagoon of almost 400 square klm and it’s home to healthy populations of huge Bluefin, Golden and Giant Trevally with Wahoo, Sailfish, Marlin and Mahi Mahi found on the outer reefs and in blue water.

As Christmas Island is almost right on the equator the weather does’nt change much year round. Typical daily temperatures year round are around 30 with night times around 23. The area is a little rainfall year round with a touch more rain october to december.

It is naturally the excellent Bonefishing that attracts fishermen to Kiritimati with miles of shallow, warm waters to wade through often less than knee deep and huge and aggressive bonefish feeding in the higher parts of the tide. Best conditions are found in light winds, with clear skies, inbound tide shortly after or before a new or full moon. Fly fishing is the most preferred technique but Bonefish will also be caught with spin fishing outfits. Bonefish cruise around the flats dining on the bottom and can spook extraordinarily quickly so the plop of a lure or slice can spook them off. You will need to be well placed to cast well to 40 foot and delicately lay down a fly near to the fish. Most Bonefish landed are less than 5 lb but giants of twice that size are usually landed.

Guiding

It is often desirable to take a local guide as their experience and understanding will secure you a lot more fish and when I was there I saw only 40% of the fish the guides saw. At around $50 a day it is well worth it and they require the money that visitors bring to the economy. Most accommodation houses will prepare packages including a guides and a boat but you must bring all your own equipment as little is available for hire or sale.

Where To Stay

Accommodation on Christmas Island is mostly clean and adequate but basic. Food will be good though not fancy and there are very few shopping facilities available. The Australian dollar is the currency of use, electricity is 240v, water should often drunk from sealed bottles and there are no exotic illnesses known.

Travel To Christmas Island

Air Pacific, Fiji’s national carrier is the sole airline to fly to Kiritimati and they do this only once per week from Fiji and Hawaii. All flights arrive and depart wednesdays
