Black bass fishing with shiners is not a new concept. Shiners – small, bony fish that are part of the carp family – have been used to catch bass for a long time. Shiners are bred all over the US and are sold as live bait quite commonly. The popularity of this type of bait is partly due to the fact that shiners can survive in fresh water and salt water.

Shiners are available at most good bait shops and shiner farms countrywide. You can even buy them at country stores in areas where bass fishing is popular.

Tricks For Black Bass Fishing With Shiners

When you go black bass fishing with shiners, the best technique to use is trolling. Trolling is done by hooking the shiner securely through its mouth and letting your fishing line drift behind your boat. It is also a good idea to include a strike indicator, such as a balloon, which you should attach at least two feet from the shiner. This will help you to keep an eye on your bait – with the balloon in place you will know exactly where your bait is and whether or not you get a bite.

Once your shiner is attached securely, move the boat forward slowly. This will lure black bass to the surface of the water. Bass always tend to go for the shiner’s head first. This increases your chances of catching the bass as the hook is attached to the shiner’s mouth. To maximize your catching potential, you may want to attach three trolling shiners to your boat – at the back and on either side of your boat. The bass are almost certain to take notice!

When you are black bass fishing with shiners, always keep an eye on the shiners. As bass approach them, they will become frightened and swim around frantically. When you notice your shiner moving, stop the boat to encourage the bass to swim nearer to the surface. This will make it easier for the bass to take the bait. Once this done, you merely need to wait patiently to reel in your catch.
