Helpful Tips On Bass Fishing With A Fly Rod

November 12th, 2007 Posted in Fly Fishing For Bass

It may seem a bit strange to go bass fishing with a fly rod. Trout are traditionally the fish of choice to go after with a fly rod, however there are other fish such as pike, carp and bass which can all be easily caught with a fly rod. If you are interested in trying out bass fishing with a fly rod, there are a few things that you should know about.

Bass On The Attack

Firstly, it makes perfect sense to go bass fishing with a fly rod, as bass are aggressive hunters. If you have ever gone fishing for bass using live shiners, you will know how they use a lunging motion to attack their prey, swallowing them headfirst. If they are unable to get a shiner in their mouth with their first try, a bass will actually buffet its body against the tiny fish and try to stun it into submission.

Because of this attack mentally, one can understand why bass fishing with a fly rod can work very well. With its large mouth, bass can engulf bait with strong precision that is amazing to watch. To catch a big mouth bass using a fly rod you employ many of the same techniques you use when you catch a trout. Flip the fly over the water, drop it through the glistening surface and let it do its job. You will find bass are easier to hook than trout when it comes to fly fishing.

What Are The Best Fly And Rod To Use?

Wooly Buggers are without a doubt the best fly for bass fishing with a fly rod. The large size of this particular fly makes it perfect for enticing largemouth and smallmouth bass alike. While most bass will try for any size of dry fly, the larger the fly the better.

The best rod for catching bass is a 6 to 7 weight fly rod. It is best to use a rod that has both a floating and sinking line. People have been known to catch bass using a 4 or even a 5 weight fly rod, but casting with such big flies can be difficult. You should first try to get a feel for whichever rod you plan to use before heading out to the water to make sure that you have a comfortable cast. With a comfortable cast, you can head out bass fishing with a fly rod where you are guaranteed to have a lot of fun.
