The Dangers of Backpacking
March 6th, 2009 Posted in OutdoorsSometimes the only opportunity most of us have to see beautiful nature is to backpack with our friends. Though man has tried, the concrete jungle can not compare in aesthetics to mountain tops, hills and valleys. A backpacking trip may be the best opportunity for those of us who want to get in touch with nature.
Though it can be fun, it can also be hazardous for those who do not prepare well. Most of the time, it is recommended to have a guide to point you through the unused trails. If you are hiking in the off season however, you might be on your own. In this case, you need to be aware of several risks and dangers while hiking.
People normally choose to go backpacking in the warm season. With warm weather comes the risk of dehydration. Since you will be doing a lot of walking in low humidity climate, you will need to replenish your body water. Always carry extra water and purifying tablets to use and also for emergencies. Be very conservative as you use the water.
We try and get away from city life but we get bad weather instead. Do not ignore any weather forecasts. Make sure you have a good tent such as the Kelty Grand Mesa 4 in order to save yourself from sleepless nights in storms. You will never regret backpacking with a good quality tent.
Most of the time in the wilderness, the days may be very hot. However the nights can be very cold especially in higher altitudes. This can be further exasperated by wet clothing leading to hypothermia. You should never go backpacking without learning the symptoms and causes of hypothermia and how to treat it.
It is not our idea to scare you from backpacking. It is just prudent to be aware of any risks that you may be exposed to. This can not only save your life but also make your backpacking trip more enjoyable. You will have more fun if you know that you are prepared for any eventuality in the wild.
