March 6th, 2009 Posted in Outdoors

Winter camping will likely provoke some heated debate. Some folks are dead set against such activates but is it really all that bad. What an adventure into the white world of winter. Having the chance to explore and experience the cold side of nature.

Why allow the winter months to cage you inside your house and keep you from getting out into nature. Why stick with just the warm months for camping, rather try out some winter camping as well. What, you think it might be too cold? Just dress up and stay warm. You will not need to just gear up with some good warm outdoor winter gear and enjoy the season.

But can winter camping be dangerous? Sure anything is dangerous including sitting on your behind watching TV! It would not be a good idea to try winter camping without learning about it, getting some advice and taking along proper equipment. But the whole idea of winter camping is no more dangerous then most other activities. Now with that said there are extreme cases, if you try camping out when it is 60 below zero you are asking for trouble.

What about camping gear for your winter outing? There are a couple things you might want to be sure you have in the winter that are not so important in the summer. For starters you will want some warm gear. This will include boots, snow suit or snow pants and jacket with hat, and mittens or gloves. You will also want a tent that is designed for harsh winter climates such as The North Face Mountain 25 tent.

Now some other items that will come in handy are sun glasses. Okay this is not for a fashion statement but on a sunny day the reflection of the white snow can be blinding and leave you with a headache. Also bring along a shovel and snow shoes. You never know when you might need to do some digging. The snowshoes might also act like a shovel but it depends on the style. But if you are hiking into your camp snowshoes will be a big helping in getting there.

Well, not it is time to prepare for a winter camping trip. Will it be different from your summer outings, you bet; and that is half of what makes it so much fun. Now be sure you get some good education on winter camping along with proper gear before you head out and enjoy the magical wonders of winter.
